Make ‘Em Laugh*
One of my first jobs out of University was to watch thousands of commercials and sort them into categories for research purposes at the Television Bureau of Canada. When interviewed for the job, I remember saying, “Who wouldn’t want to watch commercials all summer?” Apparently, that clinched it for me, since no one felt quite as passionate about commercials as I did. Perhaps that was a foreshadowing into my current profession?
Only recently have I acknowledged how much I still like a good commercial. After watching thousands of TV commercials at TVB and subsequently voicing several more thousand over the past ten years, I am indeed discerning and impressed with great scripts. To my surprise, as well, I’ve never written a blog about commercials, and yet they are the lifeblood of my business.
This blog post is inspired by two commercials that recently made me laugh ’til I cried.
First, a brand new Mustang commercial… “Mustang Speed Dating”. I suppose everyone will have their own take on this (extended) commercial. For me, it’s the things the unsuspecting males say on this blind date…especially when their testosterone is turned up a few notches by the speed of a mustang. Seriously…cried laughing…
Men say the darnedest things, don’t they?
Up next, a “Go Daddy” commercial that touched a nerve with me as an entrepreneur, and again had me, and my kids, laughing till I cried.
Any commercials that stand out as hilarious to you? Please pass along! Perhaps I’ll start collecting them in my “free-time” …
CLICKT TO HEAR>>>*”Make ‘Em Laugh” – a song first featured in the 1952 film Singin’ in the Rain, frenetically performed by Donald O’Connor. Written by Nacio Herb Brown and Arthur Freed, the song is closely based on Cole Porter‘s “Be a Clown“. – As per Wikipedia.
I’m glad I’m not alone. I too love commercials and though I can’t think of a specific one right now, I love the ones that make me laugh (repeatedly) and cry. Thanks Tash for the opportunity to voice a guilty pleasure.

I don’t know if you see this one in Canada, but Flo in those Progressive Insurance commercials always cracks me up. The punchline on the current one is, “Sprinkles are for winners.” Have you seen it?
